“Knee-ding” a Knee Specialist?

Our knees are essential to our everyday life. And every day they get a workout: whether we’re simply walking around our home or at work, or we’re running or participating in some kind of sports activity. And the more we do, the more we ask of our knees. So, it’s not uncommon that as people get older, many are experiencing knee aches and pains.

Sometimes the only way to get rid of that pain and regain a quality of life is to have a knee replacement. If you’ve been told you need to see an orthopedist, do you know where to begin looking?

Finding a Good Orthopedist

Maybe your primary physician has referred you to someone already, but if not, you’re on your own to find a knee replacement specialist in Atlanta.

Your insurance company should have a list of providers you can choose from. Of those, ask your family or other people you know if they’ve heard of any of them. If they haven’t, you can go to each of their websites and read their biographical information before making an appointment to see someone. This will likely tell you how long they’ve been in practice, what their professional training is, etc.

You want someone who has been in practice for several years. While younger surgeons may be more up-to-date on the latest trends and technologies, it may be more important to choose someone who has been around for at least a little bit and done a number of surgeries involving knee replacement in Atlanta.

You should also make sure that anyone you select has their license in good standing and has never had it revoked or suspended.

Considerations When Meeting With the Surgeon

  • When you have your first consult with the surgeon, how comfortable do you feel? Having major surgery, especially when something is being replaced, is no small thing. You’re bound to be nervous. Does the surgeon have a good bedside manner and make you feel comfortable? Do you feel confident having your life and limb in this person’s hands?
  • Does (s)he explain things in a way you understand, or do they speak in medical-ese and it’s all Greek to you?
  • Does the surgeon treat you and your concerns with respect and fully answer your questions? Or are you still left scratching your head even walking out to the parking lot?
  • Ask what complications could arise with such a procedure.
  • Ask if they use robotics as part of the surgery. Robotics help make for a more precise procedure and more hospitals or surgeons are using them these days.
  • Ask whether they will prescribe outpatient physical therapy after the procedure. This is important so you can strength and full use of your new knee as soon as possible following surgery.
  • Above all, remember that you’re not obligated to have a knee replaced by the first surgeon you speak to. If you’re not comfortable about anything at all, talk to other surgeons until you find one you like and feel comfortable with.
If you follow these guidelines when searching for a kneereplacement specialist in Atlanta, you should find a great should find a great surgeon and have a successful procedure.
